In a dazzling showcase of theatrical excellence, the romantic comedy musical "She Loves Me" surpassed every expectation, bringing a sheer delight I never imagined. From the professionally designed set to the crisp, well-executed lines delivered by the actors, this romantic comedy left me yearning for more.
For two consecutive weekends in July 2024, I had the privilege of attending the opening night at the National Theatre in Uganda. The ambiance was perfectly set, with actors, crew, and guests adorned in a vibrant homage to the 1930s with their outfits, setting a stage for what promised to be a night of exceptional artistry.

From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was palpable with the charm of the era, as guests and performers alike embraced the period's aesthetic with impeccable style. The evening was enhanced by a sumptuous array of refreshments that lingered delightfully through both the performance and the intermission, making for an immersive experience.

By and by, I entered the theatre and settled into my preferred back row seat. The opening remarks by the esteemed Director Ms. Aganza Kisaka signalled the beginning of an artistic journey that was both profound and enchanting. Her vision, supported by the skillful Assistant Director Mr. Simeon Lakuc and others like Music Director Ms. Miriam Mwase, brought the essence of Broadway to the heart of Kampala, demonstrating the remarkable synergy of creative talent and meticulous execution.
The actors graced the stage with remarkable entrances, particularly Ms. Camilla Alina, who starred as Ilona Ritter. Her seductive sway and perfect embodiment of the character quickly captured my attention, as well as that of Steven Kodaly, played by Mr. Greyc Miguel Matovu. His musical talent and skillful portrayal of a rake and master of charm allowed him to effortlessly captivate the audience, drawing them into the tangled web of deceit and desire he wove.

Ms. Tayo Shonubi and Mr. Amanyire Joel Andrew, in their roles as Amalia Balash and Georg Nowack, respectively, demonstrated exceptional skill and chemistry. Shonubi's global musical theatre experience shone brightly, complementing Andrew's impressive acting and dancing abilities, which together created a compelling and endearing Mr. Nowack. Shonubi's powerful vocals and emotional depth brought Amalia to life, while Andrew's nuanced performance and graceful movements added layers to Georg's character. Their dynamic interplay and heartfelt performances created a captivating and unforgettable theatrical experience.

My sneaky favourite was Arpad Laslo, played by Alisanyukirwa Joy Matovu, who displayed his acting artistry as well as his athletic abilities on stage. He was such a charm and joy to watch, as his comic character brought the sick and bed-ridden Mr. Maraczek—played with exceptional depth by Ugandan award-winning Afro-soul artist and songwriter Mr. Kenneth Mugabi—back to life. His energy and humor were infectious, adding a delightful buoyancy to the production.

The ensemble cast and crew, among others from Yenze Theatre Conservatoire, mentioned above, lit up the stage, leaving me thoroughly satisfied and eager for the next performance. The carol bells rang early, and the Christmas cheer filled the room, moving some audience members to tears of joy as each show concluded.
